Henry Finch- From Rock to Pop

His name is Henry Finch and he is from Los Angeles, CA. He has been singing for about 6 years but has been performing for about twelve years off and on. He used to mainly be a guitarist. He performed that way as a teenager, until he evolved...

There were a lot of different things that inspired him to be a singer. But one of the main reasons was because he was sick of writing songs but not having anyone to sing them. After being in bands for years he learned how taxing they could be and he figured it would be easier to learn to sing himself. A part of him always wanted to be a singer anyway. When he was a teenager he used to look up to Nate Barcalow, lead singer of the rock band Finch as well as Hayley Williams from the band Paramore. Those amazing Artists and a few others inspired me to start playing around with the idea of being a singer.

His first stage performance was between the ages of 17 and 18 with his band at the time "Henna." It was actually pretty great. They played the whiskey on the sunset strip with a few other bands. He shares that the whole thing is honestly such a blur. He remembers being nervous and seeing most of his friends in the front row. But what he most remembers is the buzz, the energy he got before and after he performed on stage.

One of his biggest supporters is his best friend Ryan Pikes. He’s actually a very talented rapper and lyricist in his own right. He goes by “Prototype the Spitter” you can check him out on spotify. Henrys' first single off his Turning Point EP “Make Believe” actually includes a feature by him!

The other supporters would of course be his close friends, family and even his Instagram followers. On IG is where he posts a lot of his musical content for them to see. He receives mostly a diverse group of people. He has post hardcore and indie rock roots even though he sings pop but it can be heard throughout his music and he thinks people can tell. He also does a lot of acoustic covers which catches the attention of a more alternative crowd.

As a singer the most challenging moment in his career has been changing his vocal style. He is use to rock vocals since he's been singing that way for most of his singing career. But, he recently took a huge liking to R&B and that has dramatically changed his style. The popular Artists The Weeknd and Justin Bieber have become huge influences to him. He studied them constantly when learning to curve his voice and vocal melodies away from rock.

Some of the best advice he's been given was actually by an old singing teacher. It was, and he paraphrased here: "Practice a song a million times and you might get it right on stage." Essentially rehearsal is hard and sometimes tedious work but it’s a necessity.

He practices five times a week for about 3 hours a day and that’s just his voice. ON the same five days he rehearses guitar for another two hours after that. In that time as his music career takes off the one thing he wishes he could change is his financial situation from being a “starving artist” so he can afford vocal lessons. He believes in himself so in five years he sees himself playing to sold out shows across the country and making music for video games and films. His fingers are crossed!

If he had to choose his greatest strengths he would say one would be: his talent as a lyricist. He feels his lyrics have evolved so much to the point of being very personal which he feels his listeners can take more from. Another strength he would have to lean toward would be: his ability to belt. Since he does come from a rock background the belting aspect is something that has definitely stuck with him. He feels a lot of his influence comes from Ace Enders singer of The Early November resonate in his music. The passion Ace Enders puts in his belting is unmatched and something Henry aspires to do as well. His third greatest strength as a singer he feels: is his talent as a composer. The fact that he can write his own music, tailor it to himself and doesn't need anyone else for that he feels is something invaluable to a singer.
